Churches leading change in downtown Indy

The article “Churches anchoring redevelopment near Downtown” in the Indianapolis Star Monday detailed initiatives of two Christian churches.

Reporter Ruth Serven interviewed Jeb Fuller, who started a ministry in the Old Southside neighborhood. Fuller is moving his family there as part of a project led by Mount Pleasant Christian Church, Greenwood. He said his goal is to make sure downtown revitalization “doesn’t leave low-income residents behind.”

Said Fuller: “We see churches failing, and it’s not because God is failing, but because we’ve failed neighborhoods like this.”

An established group, the Englewood Community Development Corporation, which has been around 30 years, was also highlighted. ECDC was started by Englewood Christian Church.

Co-director Joe Bowling said some faith-based groups begin projects before becoming part of the community. He advises them to learn the neighborhood first. "Wait for the opportunity to be asked to contribute."
